This was one of the best experiences I've had in LA in the past two years: an evening hike with the Sierra Club. Well organized and populated, we met at 7 after sundown and headed towards the griffith park canyon fire trail while the coyotes wailed in the near distance.
I kept wondering to myself, "but why at night?". My question is immediately answered upon the first ascent into the mountain.
The only thing that would have made it better is if we told each other scary stories at the top of the hill. But no one brought a flashlight to prop under our chin for horror effect.
